Our story of Yanitza
Naming fashions travel with communities rather than with languages. The -itza names are a Caribbean development: Maritza arrived first and became common in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic during the twentieth century, and once it was familiar the ending detached and became productive, giving Yaritza, Yanitza, Deyanitza and dozens more. A Spaniard meeting those names reads them as foreign, because nothing in peninsular Spanish naming produced them, and a Mexican reads them as Caribbean for the same reason. The lesson generalizes: national name stocks diverge much faster than the languages they sit in, so knowing that a name is Spanish tells you very little about where its bearer's family came from, while knowing its suffix often tells you a great deal.

Not established
Yanitza is a Caribbean Spanish formation, built from a Yan- opening related to Yanira or Juana and the productive -itza ending. The suffix appears to have spread from Maritza, a name of separate and unsettled origin. No inherited etymology attaches to the compound; the peak is 2008.

Line the two peaks up, and Ellyse's path sketches the road Yanitza is walking now.
Yanitza sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
