The story of Wilfredo
Wilfrid of York spent his career in disputes and appeals to Rome, and his name kept the compound alive after the Conquest when most English names were displaced. Norman and Germanic forms took it to the continent, and Spanish and Portuguese made Wilfredo and Wilfredo. It was well used in Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic in the twentieth century and reaches American records from there.
Meaning
desire for peace
From Old English wil, will or desire, and frith, peace; the compound was borne by a seventh-century bishop of York whose long quarrels with kings sit oddly against it.

The Ignatius test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Wilfredo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ignatius climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ignatius's path sketches the road Wilfredo is walking now.
Wilfredo sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Old English meaning with a documented seventh-century bearer.
- Fredo and Wil are both ready short forms, in two languages.
- Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- Wilfred is the English form and reads as considerably older.
- Eight letters and three syllables is a fair amount for early handwriting.
- The Fredo clip carries a strong association from a well-known film.
