From Ya'aqov to Jimmie
The story of Jimmie
James descends from Iacomus, the softened late-Latin form of Iacobus, which is why English carries both James and Jacob as separate names for what began as one. Jim is the ordinary clipping, and Jimmy or Jimmie the affectionate stretch. The -ie spelling was the American preference in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, when the ending was applied to Willie, Bennie, Eddie and Freddie alike; Jimmie peaked in the 1930s and faded as the fashion did.
Meaning
heel-holder, supplanter
