Our story of Benuel
Ours, offered as ours. Amish naming draws on a narrow and deliberately old stock — Amos, Levi, Enos, Benuel, Yost — and the community's isolation has preserved forms that dropped out of general German-American use two centuries ago. Benuel is one of them. Whether it began as Bethuel worn down in Pennsylvania Dutch speech or was formed on Ben with a Hebrew ending, the community that carries it has been carrying it long enough that the question no longer matters much to them.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source is established. The -uel ending is genuinely Hebrew, the element meaning God that closes Samuel, Lemuel and Bethuel, and Benuel may be a Pennsylvania Dutch reshaping of Bethuel or a formation on Ben. Neither is documented.

The Simone test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Benuel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Simone climbed just as high around 1938, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Simone's path sketches the road Benuel is walking now.
Benuel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
