The story of Ignatius
Ignatius of Antioch was martyred around 108 and wrote seven letters on the way to Rome that are among the earliest Christian documents outside the New Testament. Meaningscholars disagree
fiery
From the Roman family name Egnatius, of probably Etruscan origin and unrecovered meaning. The spelling was altered toward the Latin ignis, 'fire', which produced the fiery reading — a folk etymology of the same kind that put the h into Anthony. The original meaning is not recovered.

The trade-off
- Two genuinely consequential figures of Christian history carry it.
- Iggy and Nacho are two short forms at very different registers.
- The false-fire etymology is itself a good story about how names change.
- The fiery meaning is a later reinterpretation rather than the origin.
- Three syllables and a spelling that has to be dictated.
- It reads as strongly Catholic.
