Our story of Jahari
Our story of Jahari is a story of a sound that might have a source. The Swahili johari means a jewel — a word Swahili took from Arabic, where jawhar means both a gem and the essence of a thing. At the same time, American naming had Ja- fronts and -ari endings in wide circulation, and Jamari, Amari and Jahmari were all in the registers. Jahari appears in the 1990s. Some families reached for the Swahili and some for the sound, and the record does not separate them.

Not established
No settled etymology. It may reflect the Swahili johari, 'jewel', itself borrowed from the Arabic jawhar, 'gem' or 'essence'. It may be a modern American coinage on the Ja- front, in the pattern of Jamari and Jahmari. Neither route is documented for this spelling.

The Audra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jahari's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Audra climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Audra's path sketches the road Jahari is walking now.
Jahari sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- The Swahili connection is claimed rather than documented for this spelling.
- Jamari and Jahmari are close enough to cause constant confusion.
- It will be respelled by other people regularly.
