The story of Sylvan
Silvanus was a Roman woodland god and also an early Christian saint's name; Silvanus appears in Paul's letters as a companion. Pennsylvania is Penn's woods, from the same root. The name has been used in English since the seventeenth century, and Sylvan appears in the American registers in current use.
Meaning
of the woods, forest-dweller
From the Latin silva, 'wood' or 'forest', through silvanus, 'of the woods'. Silvanus was a Roman god of woodland and boundaries. The y spelling is a Renaissance affectation from a supposed Greek link that does not exist; silva is the correct Latin. The meaning is undisputed.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

- Pennsylvania carries the same root, which is a good and unexpected connection.
- Syl and Van are two short forms with real use.
- The y spelling is a Renaissance error; Silvan is closer to the Latin.
- Sylvia is the far commoner feminine and will be assumed related.
- It is rare enough in English to be asked about.
