Our story of Viona
The Ossian poems were the literary sensation of the eighteenth century. Macpherson presented them as translations from a third-century Gaelic bard, Europe believed him, Goethe translated passages, Napoleon carried a copy on campaign, and Scotland acquired an ancient epic it had not written. Scholars established fairly quickly that the material was at best fragments heavily rewritten and at worst invention, but the damage and the influence were done. Among the debris are names: Oscar, which Napoleon liked enough to give to a godson who became king of Sweden, Malvina, Selma and Fiona, none of which is attested before Macpherson. Names born that way behave unusually in the records, appearing suddenly and everywhere at once, and Viona sits in that neighborhood without anyone being able to say for certain that it belongs there.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
