Vincenza
Feminine · “conquering”
Vincenza is the Italian feminine of Vincenzo, and its American peak — inside the top six hundred and thirty in 1913 — is a piece of migration history rather than of fashion. The great Italian arrival in the United States crested in exactly those years, and the girls' names that came with it, Vincenza, Concetta, Carmela and Assunta, all peak within a decade of each other and then decline together.

The story of Vincenza
Saint Vincent of Saragossa, martyred in 304, made the name a standard one across the Latin West, and Saint Vincent Ferrer and Saint Vincent de Paul kept it there. Italy has particularly strong local cults: Vincenzo is among the most common men's names in Sicily and Calabria, where saints' names dominate naming far more than in the north. Southern Italy is also where the great majority of Italian emigrants to America came from, which is why the American record for Vincenza is so sharply concentrated between 1900 and 1925. Naming a daughter after a male saint by feminising his name is ordinary Italian practice and produced Vincenza, Antonia, Giuseppa and Nicoletta alike.
Meaning
conquering
Latin Vincentius is built on vincere, 'to conquer' — the verb behind victor, invincible and convince. It was a Christian name from the start rather than a classical Roman one, chosen for its sense of victory over sin and over death, and it belongs to the same family of hopeful Late Latin names as Victor and Vitalis. The Italian Vincenzo and its feminine Vincenza carry the meaning unchanged.

Pronouncing Vincenza
veen-CHEN-zah
Three syllables, stress in the middle, with the c said as ch — Italian c before e is always soft. English speakers reading it cold produce vin-SEN-zuh, which is the anglicized version and is widely used in America. Both are heard, and Italian-speaking families keep the ch.
