Viliami
Masculine · “resolute protection”
Viliami is Tonga's William, and the reshaping is thorough: Tongan has no w, no r and no consonant clusters, and every word must end in a vowel, so a Germanic compound about will and helmets comes out as four open syllables. It is among the commonest men's names in Tonga.

The story of Viliami
Methodist missionaries reached Tonga in the eighteen-twenties and the kingdom converted; biblical and English names came with them and were adapted to a language with a very small consonant inventory, producing Viliami for William, Sione for John, Sela for Sarah and Semisi for James. Those forms are now thoroughly Tongan and are the ordinary names of the country. Viliami came to American records with Tongan families, mostly to Utah, California and Hawaii.
Meaning

The Eyal test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Viliami's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eyal climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eyal's path sketches the road Viliami is walking now.
Viliami sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is the same name as William, so it is legible while looking entirely distinct.
- Vili and Will are ready short forms for Tongan and English settings respectively.
- Four open syllables make it easy for English speakers to say correctly.
- American forms will default to William, and the correction becomes routine.
- Four syllables is long for paperwork and gets clipped without being asked.
- Outside Pacific Islander communities the name is unfamiliar and gets spelled out.
