Vander has been on American birth records since the nineteenth century, when Dutch family names of the Hudson Valley were being handed down as first names. It went quiet for a long stretch and has come back with a young, thin wave — the children carrying it now are mostly still in school. Two syllables, both easy: VAN-der, with the same steady landing as Walker or Archer.

How old is the name Vander?

Vander first appears in US birth records in 1884 — 141 years ago. The typical Vander is a kid of about 12 — this name's wave is very recent. About 1,500 people named Vander are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Vander most popular?

Vander peaked in 1887, reaching #679 nationally. Today it ranks #1352, 673 places below that high. See the whole 1887 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Vander

The van der element belongs to Dutch and Flemish naming, where it marks a family by place — of the hill, of the meadow, of the bridge — and it crossed the Atlantic with Dutch settlement in New York and the Hudson Valley. Nineteenth-century American parents were fond of promoting surnames to first position, and that is the likeliest route by which Vander first appears on US records. Separately, Vander works as a short form of Evander, a name that reached English through Greek Euandros by way of Roman literature. In Brazil the syllable took root in its own way, heading a whole family of names — Vanderlei, Vanderson, Vandersonio — which keeps the sound in wide use in Portuguese.

Meaningscholars disagree

Either "of the" — from the Dutch surname element — or "good man," if read as a short form of Evander

Two roads meet at this spelling. In Dutch and Flemish surnames, van der means "of the": Van der Berg, of the mountain; Vanderbilt and its relatives all begin this way, and American families turned such surnames into given names. The other road is Evander, the English form of Greek Euandros, "good man," of which Vander is a natural clipping. Both are live; which one a given family meant is usually a matter of that family's own history.

Pronouncing Vander

VAN-der

Stress on the first syllable, which rhymes with "can." The ending is the same unstressed -der as in wander. Spelling and sound match closely enough that most people get it right on the first try, though some will reach for VON-der from the German von.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled the way it sounds, with no silent letters and no competing variants to correct.
  • Comes with ready-made short forms — Van above all, which stands on its own as a name.
  • Documented on American records since the nineteenth century, so it is a revival rather than a coinage.
  • The Vander- sound is in steady use in Portuguese through Vanderlei and Vanderson, which gives it reach beyond English.
What to consider
  • It still reads as a surname to many ears, and Vanderbilt is the association most likely to surface. Some people will hear the Dutch "van der" and wait for the rest of the name to arrive.
  • Expect the question "is that short for Evander?" fairly often. An easy answer to have ready, either way.
  • A child named Vander will very likely be the only one in any school — good for standing out, less good on the years when a kid would rather blend in.
