Davion is an American name built on one of the oldest ones going — David, the Hebrew name carried through the Bible into nearly every European language — and finished with the -ion ending that gave English Davion, Javion and Tavion within a generation of each other. It has the long, open first syllable of David and then lifts at the end. Three syllables, no silent letters, nothing to explain twice.

How old is the name Davion?

Davion first appears in US birth records in 1970 — 55 years ago. The typical Davion alive today was born around 2006, making them about 19 years old. About 13,000 people named Davion are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Davion most popular?

Where it comes from

The story of Davion

David itself is ancient: Hebrew Dawid, the shepherd-king of the Bible, passed into Greek and Latin and from there into every corner of Christian Europe. Davion belongs to a much later and specifically American chapter — the flowering of newly coined given names in the later twentieth century, many of them African American, made by taking a familiar root and pairing it with a favored ending. Davion, Davon, Javion, Tavion and Dashawn all come out of that workshop, related to each other by pattern as much as by ancestry. It is a young name resting on a very old one.

Meaningscholars disagree

Most readings take it as an American elaboration of David, Hebrew for "beloved"

Two readings compete, and neither is provable from documents. One treats Davion as David extended, inheriting "beloved" through the Hebrew name. The other treats it as a sound-built name: the Dav- of David joined to the -ion/-von ending shared with Javion, Tavion and Davon, coined for its rhythm rather than to carry a translation. Both are honest descriptions of how names like this were formed.

DAY-vee-on

Stress falls on the first syllable. Some speakers compress the middle and say DAY-vyon in two beats; both are in ordinary use and neither needs correcting.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Built on David, so the first syllable is already familiar to almost everyone and the spelling follows from the sound.
  • Inherits Dave as a ready-made short form, without needing one to be invented.
  • No silent letters and one clear stress, which makes it easy to say correctly on a first reading.
  • Part of a recognizable family of names — Davon, Javion, Tavion — so it registers as familiar even to people meeting it for the first time.
What to consider
  • It sits close to Davian, Davon, Dayvon and Daevon, and will be misheard or mis-typed as one of those often enough that spelling it out becomes routine.
  • The name rose and crested within living memory, so for a while it may read as belonging to a particular stretch of decades rather than to no era at all.
  • Because it was coined rather than inherited, questions about what it means have no settled answer — you can offer the David connection, but not as documented fact.
