Its two possible roots — generosity and earnestness — are both ordinary Arabic vocabulary, the kind of word-name that needs no translation for the people who use it. The same spelling does double duty in Arabic scripture, where جاد stands for the biblical Gad. From j-d-d, the root of jidd (seriousness, diligence), it is read as earnest or committed. Both readings are current among Arabic speakers, and families often know the name by one and not the other. Separately, جاد (Jād) is how Arabic Bibles render the name Gad, the son of Jacob, so the spelling also carries that biblical link for Arabic-speaking Christians.
