Zeus
Masculine · “sky”
Four letters, one syllable, and one of the oldest names in the Indo-European world: Zeus is the sky-god of the Greeks, named in Homer and Hesiod and worshipped at Olympia, where his seated statue counted among the Seven Wonders. The word behind it is older than Greek itself, a cousin of Latin Jupiter and of Sanskrit Dyaus. As a name for a child it is very recent, and it sounds nothing like the names it sits beside on a class list.

From *Dyēus to Zeus
The story of Zeus
Greek Ζεύς is the nominative of a name whose other forms look quite different: the genitive is Διός, Dios, which is why so many ancient Greek names are built on Dios rather than Zeus — Diodoros, gift of Zeus; Diogenes, born of Zeus. The Greeks honored the god in those roundabout ways rather than handing the bare divine name to a child. Rome recognized the same figure under Iuppiter, from *Dyeu-pater, sky-father, and the shared root reaches as far as the Vedic Dyaus Pitar. The spelling Zeus traveled into English through Latin, and from there into every language that learned Greek myth from a schoolbook.
Meaning
sky, daylight, bright
Zeus goes back to the Proto-Indo-European sky-god *Dyēus, from a root meaning to shine or gleam by day — the same root that gives Latin dies (day) and the Jupiter of Rome.

The Rockey test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zeus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rockey climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rockey's path sketches the road Zeus is walking now.
Zeus sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One syllable and four letters: quick to say, quick to write, and spelled the same way in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French.
- Everyone already knows the spelling, because everyone has met the name in a myth book — no correcting, no repeating it over the phone.
- One of the oldest continuously recorded names in the Indo-European record, traced from Proto-Indo-European through Greek and Latin into English.
- Unmistakably a boy's name in US use, with no competing feminine line.
- The mythological weight arrives before the child does. Every teacher, coach and classmate will make the connection, and the Zeus of myth is remembered for thunderbolts and for a long list of infidelities as much as for kingship.
- Zeus is also one of the most popular dog names in the United States. Most people will find that charming rather than confusing, but the comment will get made more than once.
- It resists softening. There is no established shorter or gentler form to fall back on in a quiet moment — Z and Zee are about all it offers.
- A child named Zeus will very likely be the only one in the school, which cuts both ways: no surname initial needed, but no cover either.
