Where it comes from

The story of Rockey

Rocky Marciano was born Rocco Marchegiano, the son of an Italian immigrant shoemaker, and fought his way to the heavyweight championship without ever losing a professional bout. He kept the title for four years and walked away with his record clean, which nobody in that division had done before and nobody has done since. American parents followed. The same sound had a second career on the film-studio side of things: when an agent was assembling a screen name for a young actor, he is said to have taken the Rock of Gibraltar and the Hudson River and put them together, and Rock Hudson was the result — a name built in an office, by two men, out of a map.

From the word rock

This is a nickname name, and the stone is the whole of it. The sense it carries — solid, unmoved, hard to knock over — is the reason it was given to fighters in the first place, and it came into the birth records already carrying that reputation.

Fashion outlook

Rockey sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, hard-edged and instantly understood, with no explanation required anywhere in the country.
  • Rocco sits behind it as a formal version for anyone who wants one.
  • It carries a straightforward and cheerful association that has lasted three generations.
What to consider
  • Rocky is the spelling the whole world uses, so this one will be rewritten constantly.
  • The name arrives with a set of expectations about toughness that a child does not get to choose.
  • It reads as a nickname rather than a formal name, which occasionally matters on a document.
