The story of Osbaldo
Oswald of Northumbria, king from 634 to 642, brought Aidan from Iona to found Lindisfarne and was killed in battle against the pagan Penda of Mercia. He was venerated as a martyr almost at once, and his cult spread remarkably far — there are churches dedicated to him in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, carried by Anglo-Saxon missionaries. That continental spread is how the name reached Romance-language naming, and Spanish produced Osvaldo and Osbaldo. American records show it with Mexican migration, peaking in 2002.
Meaning
god-power; divine rule
Old English os means a god — specifically one of the Germanic gods, the same element as in Oscar, Osborn and the Norse Asgard — and weald means power or rule. So Oswald is divine power. The element survived Christianisation because it had become a name-building block rather than an invocation. The derivation is settled and the Spanish form preserves it exactly.

Three syllables, stress in the middle, with a b that Spanish says softly, closer to a v between vowels. English speakers reach it readily; Osvaldo and Osbaldo are near-identical in Spanish for exactly that reason.
