Where it comes from

The story of Tytan

The Titans in Hesiod are the children of Earth and Sky, and Cronus, their leader, is overthrown by his own son Zeus; the war between the two generations is one of the founding stories of Greek myth. Martin Heinrich Klaproth named the element titanium in 1795, having already named uranium after the newly discovered planet, and he explained that he preferred a name with no descriptive content at all. As an American given name Titan belongs to the recent taste for word names with force behind them, alongside Maverick, Legend and Ace, and the y respelling marks it as a name rather than a noun. Tytan's best year on file is 2015.

Meaningscholars disagree

a Titan, one of the elder gods

Greek Titan, the name of the generation of gods who preceded and were overthrown by the Olympians. The word's own derivation is not recovered; ancient writers connected it to a verb meaning to strain or to a word for the sun, and neither is secure. English titanic and the element titanium both derive from it. The y in this spelling is a modern American substitution.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tytan went to 12 boys in 2025, but Titan is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 163, which makes it the 765th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,038 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 10,479 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 142,340 for Tytan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A clear and forceful image that needs no explanation.
  • Ty is a short, current and completely established everyday form.
  • The y marks it as a name rather than a common noun.
What to consider
  • The Titans lost their war, which is worth knowing before explaining the name.
  • Titan is the standard spelling of the word.
  • It is also a moon of Saturn and a chemical element, both widely known.
