The story of Tyrik
Tariq ibn Ziyad commanded the force that landed in Iberia in 711 and defeated the Visigothic king Roderic, beginning nearly eight centuries of Muslim rule in the peninsula. The rock where he landed was named Jabal Tariq in Arabic; Spanish rendered it Gibraltar, and English took the Spanish. Very few individuals have their given name preserved in a modern place name at all, and fewer still in a name used daily by people with no idea whose it is. The Arabic name spread widely as a personal name, and in American records it appears from the 1970s in the general adoption of Arabic names, with the respelling Tyrik peaking in 1998.
Meaning
Arabic "one who knocks at the door"; also the morning star
From the root t-r-q, to strike or knock. Tāriq is one who knocks, and by extension a night visitor, and the word is used in the Qur'an for a bright star that appears at night — Surah At-Tariq is named for it. Tyrik is an American respelling that adds the productive Ty- opening; the base is the same Arabic name, and the respelling carries no meaning of its own.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
