When was the name Tyree most popular?

Tyree peaked in 1998, reaching #405 nationally. Today it ranks #1808, 1,403 places below that high. See the whole 1998 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Tyree

Tiree is almost flat: the highest point is a low hill and most of the island is machair, the fertile shell-sand grassland of the Atlantic coast. Because there is nothing to cast a shadow and nothing to hold cloud, it records more hours of sunshine in May and June than any other weather station in the United Kingdom, and it is also one of the windiest places in Europe, which is why the houses are low and the trees are absent. It fed the region for centuries and was known as the granary of the isles. It now hosts a wave-sailing championship, for reasons that follow directly from the wind.

Tyree is past its biggest year. The count topped out at 531 boys in 1999 and has eased 83% since — the slow half of a naming cycle, where a name stays familiar while getting steadily less common. The move since 2023: down 20.0%.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

#828
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tyree went to 88 boys in 2025, but Tyre is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 100, which makes it the 828th most-given boys’ name of the year — 980 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 17,081 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 19,410 for Tyree itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ty comes off the front as a short form and works for a child of either sex.
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • Tyrie, Tyrese and Tiree are all in the record and will be confused with it.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has three candidates and no answer.
