Where it comes from

Our story of Tyree

Tiree is almost flat: the highest point is a low hill and most of the island is machair, the fertile shell-sand grassland of the Atlantic coast. Because there is nothing to cast a shadow and nothing to hold cloud, it records more hours of sunshine in May and June than any other weather station in the United Kingdom, and it is also one of the windiest places in Europe, which is why the houses are low and the trees are absent. It fed the region for centuries and was known as the granary of the isles. It now hosts a wave-sailing championship, for reasons that follow directly from the wind.

An Irish surname, the Hebridean island and an American build have all been proposed and none is documented. The record holds the spelling for both sexes and explains neither.

Tyree sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1993, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Tyree sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ty comes off the front as a short form and works for a child of either sex.
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
What to consider
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • Tyrie, Tyrese and Tiree are all in the record and will be confused with it.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has three candidates and no answer.
