The story of Tyre
Tyre was one of the great Phoenician cities, a maritime power that founded Carthage and supplied the cedar and the craftsmen for Solomon's temple; Alexander besieged it for seven months in 332 before the common era and took it by building a causeway to the island, which silted up and permanently joined the city to the mainland. Its dye industry was its wealth: the murex beds off the Levantine coast were worked for centuries and the shell middens are still visible. As an American given name Tyre is far more likely a form of Tyree, and its best year in United States records is 1992.
Meaning
rock
The Phoenician city's own name is Sur, meaning a rock, from the island the city was built on; Greek and Latin gave Tyros and Tyrus, and English Tyre. Separately, the American given name is more often a form of Tyree or a Ty- prefix coinage, and those have no meaning. The English word tire for a wheel covering is unrelated.

About 1 boy in 17,081 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 142,340 for Tyre itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rodman test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tyre's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rodman climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rodman's path sketches the road Tyre is walking now.
Tyre sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
