Where it comes from

Our story of Tyonna

Ireland's counties have supplied American naming more generously than most people notice. Tyrone, Kerry, Clare, Shannon, Donegal and Derry all appear in the records, and two of them, Kerry and Shannon, became top-hundred names for American girls without anyone thinking of them as places. Tyrone arrived earliest, carried by the actor Tyrone Power in the 1930s and 1940s, and became a common American male name; its opening syllable then detached and joined the stock of productive prefixes, giving Tyrell, Tyrese, Tyra and Tyonna. The county's own name is Tir Eoghain, the land of Eoghan, named for a fifth-century king's son, and Eoghan means something like born of the yew tree. None of that travels with the prefix, which is doing purely phonetic work by the time it reaches this name.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Tyonna is an American formation from the Ty- opening, most closely associated with Tyrone and Tyra, and the -onna ending. Tyrone is from Irish Tir Eoghain, the land of Eoghan, a personal name meaning born of the yew. The compound Tyonna carries no meaning of its own; the peak is 2000.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tyonna went to 9 girls in 2025, but Tionna is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 20, which makes it the 940th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,167 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 80,363 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Tyonna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
