Tylar is a roofer. Tyler is one of the plainest occupational surnames English has — a tyler laid roof tiles, and the word is the same one, from the Latin for a tile by way of Old English. The -ar ending in this spelling is a modern American substitution that leaves the sound exactly where it was.

The story of Tylar
Occupational surnames were among the first English surnames to become fixed, because a trade was the most useful thing to know about a man in a village with three Johns. Tyler went to America and became a first name in the ordinary way, and it became a very widely used one, moving toward girls as well. The -ar ending arrived with the general American habit of respelling -er as -ar, which turns up in Skylar, Tylar and Rylar and is doing exactly one thing: making the name look like a first name rather than a surname.
Meaning
one who lays tiles
Old English tigele, a tile, comes from Latin tegula, from a verb meaning to cover — the same root as toga, which covers a person. A tyler was the tradesman who covered a roof, and the surname is one of a large family of English occupational names alongside Thatcher, Slater, Mason and Wright. The derivation is not disputed. The name also survives in Freemasonry, where the Tyler is the officer who guards the door, on the same idea of covering.

The Naimah test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tylar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Naimah climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Naimah's path sketches the road Tylar is walking now.
Tylar sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It has a plain, documented English trade behind it rather than a reconstructed meaning.
- Ty is available as a short form and is a complete name on its own.
- It goes to boys and girls in close to equal numbers, which few names actually do.
- Tyler is the standard spelling by an enormous margin, and this one will be rewritten as that everywhere.
- The -ar ending is inaudible, so the spelling has to be dictated every time and will still come back wrong.
- Because the split between boys and girls is close to even, forms and lists will guess wrong in both directions.
