Trina is the back end of Katrina — the third syllable of a name whose first two were dropped. English does this rarely; when it does, the result usually sounds nothing like its parent, and Trina is a clean example.

The story of Trina
Catherine spread across Europe on the strength of the Alexandrian martyr's legend, and every language made its own forms. German and Scandinavian gave Katrin and Katrina, and Dutch gave Trijntje and Trien — the back-end clippings that English later borrowed as Trina. American use rose through the 1960s and peaked in the early 1970s, running alongside Katrina and Trena.

pure
Through Katrina and Catherine, whose received meaning is the Greek katharos, 'pure'. That reading arrived after the name did: the earliest form, Aikaterine, is not explained by katharos, and the spelling was reshaped toward it under the influence of the saint's legend. The original sense is not recovered.

The Dianna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Trina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dianna climbed just as high around 1948, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dianna's path sketches the road Trina is walking now.
Trina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It sits inside one of the largest name families in Europe while sounding like none of the others.
- A genuine northern European clipping rather than an American invention.
- Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk in English.
- The connection to Catherine is invisible without explanation.
- The meaning of the parent name is not actually recovered, whatever the standard reading says.
