Trey is a number, and it comes from card tables. Old French treis, three, entered English as the name of the three on a die or a playing card, and American families adopted it for a third-generation son — a man named for his father and grandfather is often called Trey. Treyvion extends it.

Where it comes from

Our story of Treyvion

English has almost no number names, which is unusual: Latin had Quintus and Sextus, Akan names the day of the week, and several traditions count children directly. What English has instead is Trey, and it arrived by an odd route — through gambling. The three of a suit was a treis in Norman French and a trey at an English card table by the 1400s, and it stayed a gaming word for five hundred years. Then American families, needing a spoken form for the written III, borrowed it, because Junior was taken and the third son of the same name had nothing to be called. From there Trey became a given name in its own right, and once it was a name it could be extended like any other. Treyvion, peaking in 2006, is a number word that has been through a card game, a suffix of Roman numerals and a modern naming pattern, and no longer counts anything.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No inherited meaning as a whole. Trey does have one — the three of a suit, from Old French treis, from Latin tres — and it is used in American families to mark a third bearer of the same name, the equivalent of writing III after it. The ending -vion is created, most likely on the model of Davion, Javion and Trevion. Treyvion itself has no documented reading.
