Tressie
Feminine
Tressie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 5,360 girls against 6 boys since 1880.
Tressie is the middle of Theresa with an ending on it, and it lands on an English word by accident. A tress is a lock or a plait of hair, from an Old French word about braiding, and it has been in English since the Middle Ages. The name almost certainly does not come from it, but every reader hears it.

Where it comes from
From Theresa to Tressie
The story of Tressie
English clips names from the front as a rule — Beth, Tony, Sam — and taking the middle instead is much less common. Tress comes out of Theresa by cutting both ends, which is the same operation that produces Liza from Elizabeth. The -ie ending then does what it always does: it makes the clipping affectionate and lets it be given as a name in its own right. Tressie belongs to the American nineteenth century, when Nellie, Hattie, Sadie and Tressie were all in ordinary use as full legal names rather than as pet forms.

Not established
Theresa's own origin has never been established, so a short form of it inherits a blank. The other road is the English word: tress, a plait of hair, from Old French tresse and probably from a Greek word for three, on the idea that a braid has three strands. That derivation is real for the word and speculative as a source for the name. Nineteenth-century American families did use ordinary words this way, so it cannot be ruled out.
