The story of Trenten
The Trent is one of the great rivers of England, and its name survived the Anglo-Saxon settlement intact, which is normal for large rivers and unusual for anything else — river names are the oldest layer of British toponymy. The surname followed the river; William Trent brought it to Pennsylvania and New Jersey; the town he founded became the state capital and the site of Washington's crossing of the Delaware in 1776. American use as a given name grew from the 1970s alongside Trent and Trenton, and the -en respelling belongs to the same period as Braden, Kaden and Jaden, when -en became the default ending for a boys' name in America.

Trent's town; the river name is probably 'the flooder'
Trenton, New Jersey, was named for William Trent, a Philadelphia merchant who laid out the town in the 1710s — so the immediate meaning is Trent's town. The surname comes from the English river Trent, whose name is Brittonic and pre-English. The most cited reading connects it to a root meaning to trespass or flood over, which suits a river notorious for flooding; a reading as 'strongly flowing' is also proposed. The river name is genuinely old and genuinely uncertain.
