Where it comes from

The story of Tremaine

Cornish is a Celtic language, closely related to Breton and Welsh, and its place names describe the land with the same precision as Old English ones do. Families took surnames from them, and Tremaine, Trevithick, Tregoning and Trelawny all crossed to America with Cornish miners in the nineteenth century, particularly to Michigan, Wisconsin and Montana. As a first name Tremaine belongs to the twentieth century, and it has been given especially in Black American families since the nineteen-seventies.

Meaning

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tremaine went to 19 boys in 2025, but Tremayne is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 32, which makes it the 896th most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,149 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 53,377 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,899 for Tremaine itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is precise, geographical and points at places that still exist.
  • Tre and Trey are ready short forms and both are complete names.
  • It carries a Celtic language that very few names in American use come from.
What to consider
  • Tremaine and Tremayne are both standard, so records within a family may differ.
  • The Cornish connection is invisible to almost everyone and gets explained often.
  • Three syllables is more than the sound needs, and the name gets clipped to Tre early.
