Where it comes from

The story of Tremayne

Cornwall kept its own Brythonic language until the eighteenth century, and its place names are almost entirely Cornish rather than English, which is why they look so different from those a few counties east. Tremayne is one of several places of the name in Cornwall, and it gave a surname that spread through the county gentry and then across the Atlantic. Its use as an American given name is twentieth century and belongs to the general movement of surnames into first names, with a strong showing in African American naming from the 1960s onward; its best year in United States records is 1975. The Welsh Trevor, in this same set of names, carries the same tre in its Welsh form tref.

Meaning

farmstead by the stone

Cornish tre, a farmstead, settlement or homestead, plus men or maen, a stone, in its mutated form. Standing stones were the obvious landmarks in a country full of them, and a settlement identified by one needed no further description. The same tre opens Trelawney, Tregoning, Trevithick and hundreds more.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tremayne went to 13 boys in 2025, but Tremaine is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 32, which makes it the 896th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,550 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 53,377 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 131,390 for Tremayne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuine Cornish place name with a fully documented meaning.
  • Tre and Trey are both short, current and independently used.
  • End-stressed, which is uncommon and gives it a distinct rhythm.
What to consider
  • Tremaine is the more common spelling and will be written instead.
  • Almost no American will know the Cornish element, so the meaning needs explaining.
  • It reads as a name of the 1970s and 1980s in American ears.
