The story of Toussaint
Naming a child for the day of their birth is an old Catholic habit and produced a whole set of French names: Noel, Pascal, Toussaint, Nativite. Toussaint traveled with French colonization and became particularly common in Saint-Domingue, where enslaved people were often given saints' names or feast names at baptism, and where a man born on the estate of Breda carried it into the history of the Haitian Revolution. It is still given in Haiti and in the French Caribbean, and it came to American records with families from there and from Louisiana.
Meaning
all saints
French tous, all, and saints. The name is the feast day itself, given to children born on or near it, in the same way that Noel and Pascal name Christmas and Easter.
Pronouncing Toussaint
too-SAN
Two syllables with the stress at the end, the last vowel nasal in French and no t sounded at the close. American English usually says too-SANT with the t, which Haitian and Louisiana families generally let pass.

The Socrates test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Toussaint's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Socrates climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Socrates's path sketches the road Toussaint is walking now.
Toussaint sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single feast day and can be explained in three words.
- It carries a documented history in Haiti that is taught in schools around the world.
- It is unmistakable: almost nobody else in an American room will share it.
- English speakers pronounce the final t, which French does not.
- The name is closely tied to one figure of the Haitian Revolution, so it arrives with an association.
- Outside French-speaking communities it is unfamiliar and will be spelled out constantly.
