The story of Tommaso
The apostle who wanted evidence gave Europe one of its most-used names, and Italy in particular took it up after the thirteenth century, when a Dominican from near Aquino became the most influential theologian in the western church and made the name a scholarly one as well as a devotional one. Tommaso has been steady in Italy ever since, especially in the center and south. It came to American records with Italian families and was almost always anglicized to Thomas within a generation, which is why it appears less often than the community that carried it.
Meaning
twin
Aramaic te'oma, a twin, through Greek Thomas. The Gospel of John glosses it directly for a Greek-speaking audience, which is why the meaning has never been in doubt.

The Mead test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tommaso's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mead climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mead's path sketches the road Tommaso is walking now.
Tommaso sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is the same name as Thomas, so it is legible everywhere while looking distinct.
- Tom and Tommy are ready short forms that need no explaining.
- It has a documented history running from the first century to the present without a gap.
- American forms and teachers will default to Thomas, and the correction becomes routine.
- Three syllables with a doubled consonant is more than English usually manages, so it gets flattened.
- The everyday form Tommy is very widely used and will not be distinctive.
