Terryn
Feminine · “ruler of the people”
Terryn is given to both — 592 girls and 214 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Terryn takes a man's nickname and makes it a woman's name with two letters. Terry came from Thierry, and Thierry from Theodoric — a Gothic king's name meaning ruler of the people, which is about as far from a modern American girls' name as a word can travel. The -yn ending is what carried it the last step.

The story of Terryn
Terry was a medieval English name from the Norman Thierry, and it survived mostly as a surname before returning as a first name for men. It became a widely used American men's name in the twentieth century, and once it was common the same thing happened that happens to every popular men's name: families who wanted it for a daughter reached for a marker. Terri and Terrie took the -i and -ie route; Terryn took the -yn ending that was closing Carolyn, Jaclyn and Katelyn at the same time. All three did the same job by different means.
Meaning
ruler of the people
Theodoric joins two Germanic elements: theud, a people or a nation, and ric, a ruler — the same ric that ends Frederick and Roderick and stands behind the German Reich. The name belonged to the Ostrogothic king who ruled Italy after Rome fell. French wore it down to Thierry and English to Terry, and neither wearing changed the meaning. The -yn ending contributes nothing to it.

TAIR-in, two syllables, stress at the front, the y sounded as a short i. Some say tuh-RIN, moving the weight to the back, which the -yn ending occasionally invites. The front-stressed reading is the more common.

The Joeleen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Terryn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Joeleen climbed just as high around 1940, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Joeleen's path sketches the road Terryn is walking now.
Terryn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It descends from a genuinely ancient Germanic name with a documented royal bearer.
- Terry and Ryn are both available and they go in completely different directions.
- The -yn ending makes the name unambiguous on paper in a way Terri does not.
- Taryn is the far more common spelling of a nearly identical sound, and this one will be rewritten as that.
- Terry reads as a man's name in America, so the short form pulls against the full one.
- This spelling is recorded for boys as well, though rarely, so a boy carrying it will be read as a girl on paper.
