The story of Taten
Scandinavian personal names entered English in large numbers during the Danelaw period and survived as surnames long after they stopped being given: Tate, Thurston, Osgood, Grimm and Ketil all come from that stock. Teitr was a straightforward descriptive name, and it is one of the few Norse names in English whose meaning is entirely pleasant. Tate became an American given name in the 1990s, and Taten is the extended form, adding the ending that the -aden family had made productive; its best year in United States records is 2007.
Meaning
cheerful, glad
From Old Norse teitr, cheerful or merry, which became the Middle English personal name Tate and thence the surname. The -en ending of this modern name is an English addition with no meaning; it belongs to the same family as the -en of Aiden, Braden and Hayden. The gallery in London is named after a sugar magnate of the surname.

The Tommye test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Taten's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tommye climbed just as high around 1941, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tommye's path sketches the road Taten is walking now.
Taten sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
