Tommye
Masculine · “twin”
Tommye is given to both — 52 boys and 1,456 girls since 1880. See Tommye as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Tommye feminises a man's nickname with a spelling and nothing else. The sound is identical to Tommy; the y and the final e do all the work of signaling that the name belongs to a daughter, which is a purely visual operation and one that American naming used heavily in the decades this spelling appears. The name underneath means twin.

The story of Tommye
The name is not really a name in its original context; it is a description that displaced one. The gospel of John calls him the twin, using the Aramaic word, and then a Greek word meaning the same thing, which suggests the writer expected readers to need the translation. Whatever his actual name was is not recorded. Later apocryphal writings, particularly in the Syriac tradition, took the epithet seriously and identified him as the twin brother of Jesus, which the mainstream church rejected firmly and which explains a certain awkwardness around him in early commentary. The name spread across Europe anyway, on the strength of a shrine in Kent and a very large medieval cult.
Meaning
twin
The Aramaic word behind Thomas means a twin, and the reading is settled. What the gospels never say is whose twin: the epithet is used of the disciple as though it explains something, and no sibling is ever named. Later traditions supplied one, controversially. The feminising spelling here contributes nothing to the sense at all.
How the name formed
- An Aramaic word meaning twin, used as an epithet
- Thomas across medieval Europe
- Tommy as an English nickname
- Tommye, feminised by spelling alone
Pronouncing Tommye
TOM-ee
Two syllables, stress on the first, identical to the male spelling. The y and the final e are both silent as such: they change nothing audible and exist entirely to signal which sex the certificate belongs to.

Fashion outlook
Tommye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is universally known and needs no explaining.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- The spelling is distinctive without making the name difficult.
- The spelling is the only thing marking the name as a woman's, and spelling is invisible in speech.
- It will be written Tommy or Tommie by nearly everybody who hears it.
- It is firmly of the earlier twentieth century.
