The story of Tamarion
Marion crossed sexes twice. It was a woman's name in medieval France and England, a diminutive of Marie built with the -on ending. In nineteenth-century America it became a man's name, honoring Francis Marion, the guerrilla commander known as the Swamp Fox, and dozens of counties and towns are named for him; John Wayne was christened Marion Morrison. Through the twentieth century the male use faded and the female use returned. The -marion ending entered the prefix families in the 1990s, giving Tamarion, Jamarion and Damarion, at a point when the name's male period was already over. Tamarion's best year is 2005.

Marion is a medieval French diminutive of Marie, from Hebrew Miryam, whose sense is unresolved. It is also a surname and an American place name honoring Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War officer, which is how it became a man's name in the United States. The Ta- prefix is a free American naming element with no meaning.
