Georgio is Giorgio with the spelling anglicized, and the name underneath means a worker of the earth. Greek georgos joins the words for earth and for work, so Saint George — the dragon-slayer, the patron of England, Georgia, Ethiopia and half a dozen other places — carries the name of a farmer. Its American peak is 1989.

Where it comes from

The story of Georgio

Saint George was probably a Roman soldier martyred in the early fourth century; the dragon is a much later addition, appearing in Western sources from the eleventh century. His cult spread with the Crusades and he became patron of England under Edward III. The name is enormously widespread — Giorgio in Italian, Jorge in Spanish, Jerzy in Polish, Yuri in Russian, Giorgi in Georgian, and the country of Georgia is named for him. The Italian Giorgio came to America with Italian migration; Georgio is the American respelling that removes the silent i, and its peak is 1989.

Meaning

farmer; worker of the earth

Greek ge, 'earth', and ergon, 'work' — the same second element as in energy and surgery. Georgos is the ordinary Greek word for a farmer, and Georgios is the personal name formed from it. Virgil's Georgics, a poem about agriculture, uses the same word. The derivation is settled and unusually plain for a name of this standing.
