Tallie

Talitha koum is one of the very few places the gospels preserve Jesus's actual words. Mark quotes the Aramaic and then translates it: little girl, get up. The evangelist kept the original because the phrase was remembered as it was said, which is not something the gospels usually do.

The story of Tallie
Mark's gospel preserves a handful of Aramaic phrases and translates each one: talitha koum, little girl arise; ephphatha, be opened; eloi eloi lema sabachthani, the cry from the cross; and abba, father. The pattern is consistent enough to suggest the writer is quoting remembered speech rather than composing. Aramaic was the everyday language of Roman Palestine, Hebrew being largely liturgical and Greek the language of administration and trade, so these are the words as spoken. Talitha is a diminutive of a word for a lamb, used affectionately of a child, which makes the phrase gentler than the English can carry. The name entered English among Puritans and was used in America through the nineteenth century, mostly in the South, alongside a great many other names taken directly from scripture.

Aramaic talitha, a little girl
Tallie is a short form of Talitha, from the Aramaic talitha, a young girl, or of Natalie, Talia or the English word tally. Talitha entered English use through Mark 5:41, where the Aramaic phrase talitha koum is quoted and translated. The 1890 American peak places it among the nineteenth-century diminutives registered as full names.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
