Sylvana
Feminine · “Latin silva”
The Latin word for forest is silva, with an i. It is written sylva in a great many books because Renaissance scholars believed it came from Greek hyle, wood, and Greek loanwords in Latin were spelled with y. They were wrong about the etymology, but the spelling stuck, and Sylvana, Sylvia and Sylvester all carry a sixteenth-century mistake in their first syllable.

The story of Sylvana
Renaissance humanists were trying to restore classical spelling and sometimes overshot. Latin had borrowed a great deal from Greek, and Greek upsilon was rendered y, so a y in a Latin word was a sign of Greek ancestry: hymnus, sylla, tyrannus. Scholars who assumed silva was related to Greek hyle rewrote it sylva to display the connection. The connection is not there; silva is native Latin with no Greek source. But the corrected spelling entered dictionaries, botanical Latin, English literary usage and the names, and it is now the more familiar of the two in English while Italian and Spanish kept the i. Sylvana reaches its American peak in 1956, in the same decade as Sylvia's long plateau, and carries the error forward without anyone noticing it is there.
Meaning
Latin silva, forest or woodland
From Latin silva, a wood, and the adjective silvanus, of the woodland, which was also the name of a Roman woodland deity. The feminine Silvana is used in Italy and Spain. The y spelling is a learned hypercorrection of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and has no basis in the Latin word, which is spelled with i in every classical inscription and manuscript.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back.
