Where it comes from

The story of Silvana

Silvanus was worshipped at the edges of Roman farms, where the cultivated land met the trees, and his name became a personal one and then a Christian one. Italian made Silvano and Silvana, Spanish the same, and Portuguese Silvana too. The name was widely used in Italy through the twentieth century and reached American records with Italian and Latin American families.

Meaning

of the woods

From Latin silva, a wood or forest; Silvanus was the Roman god of woodland and field boundaries, and the name passed into ordinary use through several early saints.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Silvana went to 47 girls in 2025, but Sylvana is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 60, which makes it the 900th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,396 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 26,788 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 34,197 for Silvana itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning tied to a real and vivid image.
  • Sylvia stands beside it as a very familiar English cousin.
  • Every letter is said, so Italian and Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
What to consider
  • Silvana and Sylvana are both used and the spelling will be asked for.
  • Americans will flatten the first vowel from seel to sil.
  • It is close to Sylvia and Savannah in an English ear.
