Sydnie
Feminine · “Old English sidan ieg”
Sydney is named after a man who never went there. Lord Sydney was Home Secretary in London when the first fleet sailed in 1787, and the cove was named for him, so an American girl's name traces back through a harbor to a British politician's title.

The story of Sydnie
Place names became American girls' names in numbers during the 1990s: Savannah, Dakota, Sierra, Brooklyn, Cheyenne, Paris and Sydney all rose together, and most of them are American places. Sydney is the exception in the set, since it names a city on the other side of the world, and the chain behind it is unusually long. An English place name meaning the wide island gave a surname; the surname gave a peerage; the peerage named a cove in New South Wales in 1788; the cove named a city that grew into one of the largest in the southern hemisphere; and the city put the name in front of Americans who had no connection to any part of the chain. The -ie ending was the standard American female marker of the decade.

Old English sidan ieg, at the wide island
Sidney is an English surname, most likely from a place name meaning at the wide island or wide water-meadow. The old derivation from Saint-Denis is no longer generally accepted. The Australian city was named in 1788 after Thomas Townshend, Lord Sydney. Sydnie is a modern American spelling; its peak is 1999.

Sydnie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Margarett climbed just as high around 1932, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Margarett's path sketches the road Sydnie is walking now.
Sydnie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
