Sydelle
Feminine
A whole American generation was named by first letter. Jewish immigrant families keeping the custom of naming a child after a dead relative matched the English name to the Hebrew one by its opening sound, which is why so many Sarahs became Sydelles and Shirleys.

Our story of Sydelle
Ashkenazi practice names a child after a relative who has died, and the name that matters is the Hebrew or Yiddish one used in synagogue. The everyday name is a separate question, and immigrant families in America solved it by alliteration: the English name had to start with the same letter as the Hebrew one, and beyond that it could be anything. So Sarah gave Sadie, Sylvia, Selma, Shirley, Sydelle and Sandra; Moshe gave Morris, Milton, Murray and Marvin; Chaya gave Ida and Ethel through the Yiddish. The result was a cohort of American names that look like nothing in particular and are in fact carrying a strict rule. It also explains why those names cluster so tightly by decade: the rule was constant, and the fashionable English options changed.

The Maryanna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sydelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maryanna climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maryanna's path sketches the road Sydelle is walking now.
Sydelle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
