Stephano
Masculine · “Greek "crown”
Stephano is an Italian name written with Greek spelling. Italian uses Stefano — with an f, because Italian has no ph — while the ph belongs to the Latin and English tradition that gives Stephen. Stephano is the two conventions fused into a form that neither language actually uses.

The story of Stephano
Stephanos was a common Greek personal name before it was a Christian one. Its spread through Europe followed the cult of Saint Stephen, which reached Hungary early enough that its founding king took the name, and Italy early enough that Stefano became one of the standard Italian names. The ph spelling survived in Latin, French and English, while Italian regularised it to f centuries ago. Shakespeare gave the name to a drunken butler in The Tempest and spelled it Stephano, which is one route by which the hybrid spelling stayed alive in English-speaking countries. The American figures peak in 1984, in a period of general revival for Italian forms of familiar names.
Meaning
Greek "crown, wreath"
From Greek stephanos, a crown or garland — specifically the wreath given to a victor, not a royal crown, which is diadema. The name was carried by the first Christian martyr, Stephen, and the pun on his name and his crown of martyrdom was made from the earliest centuries. The Italian and Spanish forms are Stefano and Esteban; the ph spelling reflects the Greek letter phi as Latin transcribed it.

STEH-fah-noh
Three syllables, stress on the first, and the ph is said as f. Italian stresses Stefano on the first syllable, not the second — steh-FAH-no is a common English error.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Quintus test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Stephano's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Quintus climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Quintus's path sketches the road Stephano is walking now.
Stephano sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, ancient and pleasant: a victor's wreath.
- It connects to Stephen, Esteban, Étienne and István without being any of them.
- Steph and Steve are ready-made short forms in English.
- The ph spelling is not the Italian one; Italian speakers will write Stefano.
- English speakers often move the stress to the second syllable.
- It is long enough that most bearers end up using a short form daily.
