The story of Stefany
Stephanos was the name of the first Christian martyr and spread across every Christian language; the feminine Stephanie came through French and became very common in the English-speaking world in the twentieth century. The f spelling belongs to Continental Europe — German Stefanie, Italian Stefania, Spanish Estefanía — which never took the Greek ph. Stefany is the American form with the Continental consonant and the y ending, and it has been particularly at home in Spanish-speaking families here.
Meaning
crown; the victor's wreath
Greek stephanos is the garland placed on a winner's head, from stephein, 'to encircle'. It was woven: wild olive at Olympia, laurel at Delphi, wild celery at Nemea, pine at the Isthmus. The value was entirely symbolic — the wreath cost nothing and was the whole prize. Stephanie is the French feminine and the reading is documented and undisputed.

About 1 girl in 11,906 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 29,223 for Stefany itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
