France is named after a tribe that was a minority in it. The Franks were a Germanic confederation who took over a country of Gallo-Roman Latin speakers, adopted their language, and gave the place their own name; the population that ended up called French had almost no Frankish ancestry at all.

France first appears in US birth records in 1894 — 131 years ago. The typical France alive today was born around 1944, making them about 81 years old. About 600 people named France are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of France

What is remarkable about the settlement is how little the incomers changed. The Franks were a ruling group numbering perhaps a few tens of thousands in a population of millions; they gave up their own Germanic language for the local Latin within a few generations, kept the Roman administrative apparatus where they could, and left their mark mainly on vocabulary, place names, personal names and law. The language they abandoned survives only as a layer of loanwords in French, a large number of them military or agricultural. A country and a language now carry the name of a people who stopped speaking their own tongue almost immediately after arriving.

Meaning

Of the Franks

The tribal name is the source, and its own origin is argued about: proposals connect it to a word for a javelin or throwing axe, or to a word meaning bold or fierce. The famous connection to freedom runs the other way round, since the word for free comes from the tribe rather than the tribe from the word.

France sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

France sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, unmistakable and needs no explaining anywhere in the world.
  • Fran is a plain, established short form available immediately.
  • It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
What to consider
  • The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
  • It is a country before it is a person and will be read that way first.
  • It is strongly dated to the early twentieth century in American records.
