Stefani
Feminine · “Greek "crown”
Stefani is the Italian and German spelling of a Greek word for a crown — specifically the woven wreath given to a victor, not the metal crown of a monarch. That distinction survives in modern Greek, where stefani still means a wreath, and it is worth knowing: this is a name about winning a race, not about inheriting a throne.

The story of Stefani
Stephanos gave Latin Stephanus, and every European language took it: Étienne in France, Esteban in Spain, István in Hungary, Stefan across Germany and Slavic Europe. The feminine came later and mostly through French Stéphanie, which entered English in the nineteenth century and became a top-twenty American name in the 1970s and 1980s. Stefani is the Italian and German spelling of the same feminine, with f for ph and no final e — a spelling that in America generally marks either continental descent or a deliberate move away from the very common Stephanie. Its 1990 peak trails Stephanie's by about a decade.
Meaning
Greek "crown, wreath, garland"
From Greek stephanos, the woven wreath awarded at games and later used for the martyr's crown. Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, carried the name, which is why it spread across every Christian naming tradition. The feminine forms — Stephanie, Stefania, Stefani, Étiennette — all derive from the same word, and the etymology is not in dispute.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Stefani went to 16 girls in 2025, but Stephany, Stefany and Stefanny are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 135, which makes it the 825th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,013 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 11,906 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Stefani itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Arden test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Stefani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Arden climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Arden's path sketches the road Stefani is walking now.
Stefani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- Steph is a short form that works in every register and country.
- It is a real spelling in Italian, German and Polish rather than an American respelling.
- Stephanie is far more common in America and will be assumed on every form.
- The ph and f choice has to be given every time the name is spelled aloud.
- The 1990 peak places it in a specific American generation.
