Where it comes from

The story of Sonora

The Spanish word came into use as a name the way a good many Spanish adjectives have, and the state and the desert have carried it since the colonial period. The Sonoran Desert is the one with the saguaro cactus in it, running from Arizona into north-western Mexico, and it is among the most biologically rich deserts anywhere. As a given name Sonora is recent and mostly American, part of the group of Western place-names — Sonora, Sierra, Savannah, Dakota — used for daughters.

Meaning

sonorous, resonant

Spanish sonora is the feminine of sonoro, from Latin sonorus, 'loud, resounding', from sonus, 'sound' — the same root behind sonic, sonata and unison. The reading is exact. How the Mexican state came by the name is a separate and unsettled question, with several accounts in circulation and none established.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Spanish says so-NO-ra with fuller vowels throughout; American English reduces the first and last, which is close enough everywhere.

Sonora sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2022, with 60 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Nora and Sonny are two ready short forms and both are complete names of their own.
  • A documented Spanish adjective with a clear and unusual meaning.
  • Three syllables that read correctly in Spanish and are easy in English.
What to consider
  • It is a state and a desert first for most Americans, and the place arrives before the person.
  • Sonora, Sonoma and Senora sit close together and get confused.
  • Place-names as first names date visibly to the period that made them fashionable.
