Sonny is a form of address that became a name. English uses very few kinship terms this way: Sonny, Bubba, Sissy and Junior are about the list, and each of them started as something a family called a child rather than something written on a certificate. Most languages do not let the two categories mix at all.

Our story of Sonni
Our reading is that address terms crossing into the name stock is a narrow and interesting category. English family vocabulary is used for address constantly, sonny, sissy, bubba, junior, buddy, and almost none of it becomes a legal name, because the terms are relational: sonny means somebody's son, and a name is supposed to be a person's own. The exceptions cluster in the American South and in African American naming, where Sonny, Bubba, Sissy and Junior have all been registered. What makes them work as names is that the relation drops away with use, so that an adult called Sonny is not being addressed as a child by strangers. The same thing happened to Nonna and Nana in Italian and Greek families, and to Baba in several traditions. The category is small because the transition is difficult and most attempts do not survive the bearer's childhood.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Korena test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sonni's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Korena climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Korena's path sketches the road Sonni is walking now.
