Where it comes from

The story of Sirena

Homer's Sirens sit on an island singing, and sailors who listen are lost; they are birds with women's faces in the Greek imagination, not fish. Medieval bestiaries redrew them as fish-tailed, and that is the image Spanish sirena and Italian sirena carry. The word became a personal name in Spanish and Italian use, and it appears in American records with families from both, and separately with English speakers drawn to the sound.

Meaning

siren, mermaid

From Greek Seiren through Latin sirena; the Greek Sirens were part bird, and the mermaid image is a medieval European reinterpretation. The word also gives English the siren that warns of danger, by a nineteenth-century extension.

Sirena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 136 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sirena went to 45 girls in 2025, but Syrena is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 61, which makes it the 899th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,490 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 26,349 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 35,717 for Sirena itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning with three thousand years of literary history behind it.
  • Rena is a complete short form that stands on its own.
  • Every letter is sounded, so Spanish and Italian speakers read it correctly at once.
What to consider
  • The English word siren means an alarm as well as a myth, and both will be mentioned.
  • The Siri clip now belongs to a piece of software, which is very hard to escape.
  • The Sirens of the story lure men to their deaths, which comes with the name.
