Where it comes from

The story of Syrena

Serena was a late Roman name, borne by the niece of the emperor Theodosius, and passed into Christian use through a saint of the name. It has been in steady English use since the sixteenth century. Sirens meanwhile are the singers of the twelfth book of the Odyssey, who Homer describes as knowing everything that happens on earth; the modern warning device is named after them. The Syrena spelling with a y appears in American records from the mid-twentieth century and had its best year in 1968, and it also happens to be the Polish word for a mermaid, which is the emblem of Warsaw.

Meaningscholars disagree

calm, clear, serene

Serena is from Latin serenus, clear or fair, used of weather and of temperament, and gives English serene. Seiren, the Greek siren, is a separate word of unknown origin and names a creature whose song is lethal. The y of this spelling belongs to the second and the sound to the first, and either reading is available to a bearer.

Syrena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2012, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Syrena went to 16 girls in 2025, but Sirena is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 61, which makes it the 899th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,939 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 26,349 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Syrena itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning that can be given in one word.
  • Rena is a ready short form with its own history.
  • The y makes it visually distinctive without changing the sound.
What to consider
  • Serena is the standard spelling by a very wide margin.
  • The y suggests the siren, which means something quite different.
  • Sirena and Syrena both circulate and are read differently.
