Welsh took Jane as Siân, spelling the English J sound with the letters its own orthography uses, and made Siani and Siana as affectionate extensions. The name has been used in Wales for generations. In American records it appears both from Welsh families and, quite separately, as a spelling chosen by families who like the sound of Sienna and prefer a shorter form of it.
